About The Math Lounge
Bringing excitement back to math since 2024
Hi! I'm Mr. Dominic Buttino, creator of the Math Lounge. As a teacher and enthusiast of all things math, I thought there was a better way to instill passion and understanding of math to the next generation. Unfortunately, math is subject matter that gets butchered by many well-intentioned individuals that simply teach to the book, never questioning the application or purpose of the things being taught. Often, math is presented in the driest way possible, ensuring the loss of attention of any student.
Recently, I've launched the Crush AP Calculus Program. I have fond memories of my calculus experience and it was foundational to much of my mathematical career. Unfortunately, the beauty of calculus is lost on many teachers and as a result, students. This leads to lack of understanding, frustration, wonderings of why, and most importantly, setbacks in students' STEM or other college degrees. I am on a mission to bring a love and foundation back to students' math careers through this program. If your teen is struggling, book a time here to discuss strategies and ways we can potentially help your teen!
Hopefully, you'll find how enjoyable and exciting math can be through taking classes with the Math Lounge. Math doesn't need to be dry, and it doesn't need to be complicated. Through our lessons, math is made both fun and simple for everyone in a low pressure environment, while still focusing on the success of our students so they can do their best. Please reach out with any questions you may have!

But who is Mr. Buttino?
Good question! Let me catch you up on my background for some context. Like I said, I'm Mr. Dominic Buttino. I originally pursued actuarial science as someone crazy about and excited about all things math. The career comes with an assortment of math exams in topics ranging from probability to finance to different aspects of insurance. I was ambitious and finished my Bachelor's Degree in only two years and with several exams passed, and entered a job in casualty insurance. If actuarial science gets you excited, I hope to add actuarial courses to The Math Lounge in the future!
Unfortunately, in my particular position, I realized I was limited in my ability to implement a lot of these math skills directly into my job environment. I went broader into the world of data analysis with another position. I started to see all of the ways that math and code could stretch into the corporate world but wanted to share this message with more people. I decided to do what very little have done in the past: leave a demanding analytics career for the glamorous world of teaching. And no, I don't have any regrets :)
But I wanted to take things one step further. In some classes, I began to encounter a multitude of students disenfranchised from the world of math. They often saw math as something rather two dimensional and without character: do this process, memorize it, and move on to the next thing. In my teaching practice today and at The Math Lounge, we aim to "make math pop"; through exploring different topics first hand, students can "own their learning" and most importantly, understand why the math works the way that it does. It's my sincere hope that this generation of math students will become an unstoppable force for good and forward progress in all the math they do!
